Turf Laying & Installation in the Blue Mountains
New lawn supplied, prepped and laid — in a grass variety that will actually survive where you live.
Turf that survives a Blue Mountains winter
Laying turf up here isn't just rolling it out. A variety that thrives in Penrith can sulk for years at 1,000 metres, a good share of Mountains backyards sit in shade for most of the day, and soil over sandstone drains in ways that catch people out. Get the grass wrong and you'll be looking at a thin, patchy lawn every winter for a decade.
I'm Callum, and I mow lawns right across the Mountains most weeks of the year. That's the useful part — I see which lawns come through winter still looking good and which ones go bare, suburb by suburb. So when I lay new turf, the variety gets chosen for your altitude, your shade and your soil, not for what was cheapest at the farm that week.
One-Off Improvements or Part of Ongoing Care
One-Off Turf Laying & Installation
Ideal when lawns need replacing or specific areas need attention. A one-off project can significantly improve the look and usability of your outdoor space.
Combined With Ongoing Maintenance
Turf laying and installation can also be completed alongside ongoing garden care, helping maintain new areas and keep everything looking good long-term.
What’s Included in Turf Laying & Installation
Every turf job is quoted as a finished lawn — not a pallet of grass dropped on the verge for you to sort out.
A site look first: shade, slope, drainage, soil and access, then a variety recommendation that suits all five
Old lawn, weeds and roots removed and taken away
Ground turned, levelled and topped up with soil where it needs it
Fresh turf delivered and laid the same day it's cut
Joints butted tight and edges cut in neatly against beds, paths and driveways
Rolled down so the roots make proper contact with the soil underneath
Watered in thoroughly before I leave
Offcuts and green waste gone with me
A written watering and mowing schedule for the first six weeks
A check-in a fortnight later to see how it's knitting in
What I don't do
I don't supply turf on its own — I lay it. If you're after pallets only, I'll point you to the growers I use. Irrigation systems are a plumber's job, and if your block needs retaining or serious excavation before a lawn will work, that's a landscaping conversation and I'll quote it separately.
And the bit that's on you
New turf lives or dies on water in the first fortnight. I'll leave you a schedule and it's not complicated, but a hot week with no watering will undo a good job faster than anything I could get wrong. If you're going away, or there are restrictions on, say so before we book and we'll pick a better window.
Choosing turf for a Blue Mountains block
This is where most new lawns go wrong up here. A variety that thrives in Penrith can struggle badly at 1,000 metres, and a shaded Upper Mountains backyard is a different proposition again.
| Variety | Suits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Buffalo (e.g. Sir Walter) | SuitsLower and Mid Mountains; the most forgiving all-rounder | Worth knowingWarm-season. Handles part shade better than most, holds colour longer into the cold, but will still brown off in a hard frost. |
| Kikuyu | SuitsLower Mountains, full sun, high-traffic blocks | Worth knowingWarm-season and very vigorous — recovers fast from wear, but it’s an aggressive runner that will invade garden beds if you let it. |
| Couch | SuitsLower Mountains, full sun, fine finish | Worth knowingWarm-season. Fine leaf and looks sharp, but poor in shade and goes fully dormant and brown over a Mountains winter. |
| Tall fescue | SuitsUpper Mountains, frost-prone and shaded sites | Worth knowingCool-season, so it stays green through winter when the warm-season grasses have browned off. Struggles in prolonged summer heat and needs more water. |

Watered in properly before I leave, and you get a written watering schedule for the first six weeks.
Turf FAQs
-
Priced per square metre laid, and it depends on the variety, how much prep the site needs, and access — a flat front lawn with driveway access is very different from a sloping backyard with a narrow side gate. Send me the address and rough dimensions and I'll give you a firm figure.
-
For warm-season grasses, spring through early autumn while the soil is warm enough for roots to take hold. Tall fescue can go in later. Mid-winter in the Upper Mountains is the one time I'd generally suggest waiting.
-
Yes, that's part of the job and it's included in the quote. Laying new turf over old lawn is a false economy — it never knits in properly.
-
Light foot traffic after about two weeks if it's been watered properly. Give it a full growing season before heavy use or pets on it constantly.

I'm not a turf supplier — I lay it. If you're after pallets only, I can point you at the growers I use.
