Why weeds win in the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains is hard country for weed control and easy country for weeds. Damp, cool and misty through the middle and upper bands, with mature gardens backing onto bushland on almost every street — so there's a permanent seed source over the back fence no matter how clean your beds are.

Which is why a once-a-year blitz doesn't hold. Getting on top of weeds here is about timing and repetition: catching them before they seed, and keeping up enough pressure that the seed bank in the soil runs down over a couple of seasons.

Noxious & priority weeds

The Blue Mountains has its share of declared priority weeds, and as a landholder in NSW you carry a general biosecurity duty to manage them on your property. Blackberry, privet, broom, lantana and ivy are the ones I come across most.

Some of these are a genuine problem for the bushland next door, not just an eyesore in your yard. I'll identify what you've got, tell you what's realistically controllable, and be straight about anything that needs a licensed contractor or a call to Council rather than me.

Weed control FAQs

  • Most gardens here do best on a regular cycle rather than one annual blitz — catching weeds before they seed is the whole game. Once a garden is on top of it, visits get quicker and cheaper.

  • Often, depending on how established it is and where it's growing. Long-standing infestations on a bush block can be a bigger job than a garden service — I'll look and tell you honestly.

  • Some will — there's a seed bank in the soil and bushland over most back fences. The aim is to run it down over a couple of seasons so each visit has less to do.

  • It's the single most effective thing you can do. A good mulch layer stops most weed seed germinating and holds moisture through summer, which the plants you want will thank you for.
